I am working in the field of satellite oceanography since many years, which includes field campaigns on research vessels but also theoretical work such as modelling the radiative transfer and development of procedures for the evaluation of satellite data. For teaching at international summer schools and at University I have to prepare educational material, for which I use Blender as my favourite tool. I have already attended the Blender Conference in 2003 and 2004.

Presently I am preparing a DVD about the science of ocean colour research, which is mainly used in the field of satellite oceanography. This DVD will explain the fundamental processes of light in the sea, models of scattering functions, how light is measured and how it is used for remote sensing. The DVD will be a mixture of real videos and animations. All animations have been made using Blender. They include themes such as scattering of photons at particles, the spectral attenuation of light in the sea, instruments under water, how a satellite is scanning the ocean etc. The final DVD will be published by the IOCCG, the International Ocean Colour Research Coordination Group, in which the major space administration agency including NASA and ESA are members. In the presentation I am going to demonstrate how these animations were made.
