Currently galleries are nothing more than a bunch of 'image' content records. The template is set up to set the number of rows to 3 and to set the image dimensions. You still have to select 'click-enlarge' and center the captions though (haven't gotten around to fixing that).
As soon as I have time, I'll implement a template so we can use SiteItems for the galleries.
