Loopselect is activated either from the select menu or pressing alt-B in edit mode.

The loopselect tool starts from the nearest edge. It performs several tests on the edges that it connectes to.

  1. It checks to see if it connects to only 3 other edges.
  2. If the edge in question has already been added to the list, the selection ends .
  3. Of the 3 edges that connect to the current edge, the ones that share a face with the current edge are eliminated and the remaining edge is added to the list and is made the current edge.

The selection is confirmed with a left click and an optional modifier. The modifiers are as follows.

  1. No Modifier - Replace Current Vertex Selection
  2. Shift-Click - Add to Current Selection
  3. Alt-Click - Subtract from Current Selection

Here is an example of a full loop.

Here is a partial loop, ending at 2 edges that only connect to 2 other edges.

The edge of a cube loops like a loop but is not by the definition used.
