Multires meshes store multiple levels of subdivision. In contrast to the Subsurf modifier, any level of subdivision can be edited. These changes are then propagated to all the other subdivision levels.

Multires can be used with Sculpt Mode or Edit Mode to quickly make large changes to a model by editing on a lower level, and then returning to the highest level, where the changes will be incorporated automatically. Multires is also useful for improving editing speeds; the mesh can be displayed in the 3D View with a low polygon count, then rendered on the highest subdivision level with all details intact.

Interface

Multires has a separate panel in the Edit Buttons.

  • Add Multires - Enables multires for a mesh.
  • Apply Multires - Deletes other subdivision levels and all extra multires data. Note that after applying multires, only the current level of subdivision remains.
  • Add Level - Subdivides the model and sets the current level to the new level of subdivision.
  • Del Lower - Deletes all subdivision levels below the currently active level.
  • Del Higher - Deletes all subdivision levels above the currently active level.
  • Level - Sets the displayed subdivision level. This is the level that will be editable in the 3D View.
  • Edges - Sets what level's edges to use when Wire drawing is active. Useful for showing the underlying topology of the model without cluttering the view with too many extra edges.
  • Pin - Sets what level to apply modifiers to when rendering.
  • Render - Sets what level to render the model at when rendering.
Multires Example. The mouse head started as a simple cube, and was then subdivided to seven levels. Each level continues to be modifiable.

Notes

  • Currently, the topology of a Multires mesh cannot be modified. This means that adding and deleting of vertices, edges, and faces in Edit Mode is disabled.
  • Some other operations are only allowed on the first subdivision level. UV data and edge flags are only stored for the first level.
  • Shapekeys cannot be used with Multires.
