I thought I remembered how to do this, but I cannot find where to make the change. Several objects I've created, assigned materials, and textures to in Blender have a grayish hue, and do not show to best effect against the gray color of the render port floor. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me again, but I thought that in earlier versions of Blender there was a parameter in which one could change the color of the render view floor. I cannot find the parameter in the current (2.65a) version.
Yes, I know I can affect the view by changing the color of the light, but this also has an unsatisfactory impact on the color of the object. When rendered, I'd like my grayish object to appear to be against a much darker background.

the default background color should be nothing, I mean it should be black. If there is nothing in the scene , where is the grey color coming from? its not realistic. They should fix this problem.
Well, I found out that the setting to accomplish what I'm looking to do when using the "Cycles" render engine is accessed through the "world" button in the properties window. I've not worked out how to do it with the Blender render engine, but I assume it's in a similar location.
thanks...that helped.
and when's the next blender coming out...?
