Hi Everyone!

I'm a newbie and I just installed Blender 2.40 on my Windows XP PRO computer. I can import a .3Ds object just fine but I would like to know if its possible to import a .3Ds file in Blender and export it as .TGA file so I can use it on my virtual world in Second Life.

Hello,

I tried the thing with "installing Blender 2.40". My 3ds-file... which should actually be a cat... was opened, but it was just a simple cube.

This is the file I used, i got from a free model library:
http://rapidshare.com/files/289834516/7 ... l.3ds.html

Previously trying to open it in a new Blender version brought these mistakes:

Code: Select all

line 882, in load_3ds process_next_chunk(file, current_chunk, importedObjects. IMAGE_SEARCH)

line 464, in process_next_chunk process_next_chunk(file, new_chunk, importedObjects, IMAGE_SEARCH)

line 807, in process_next_chunk temp_dat=file.read(calcsize(binary_format))
Memory Error

I hope somebody can help, because I'm a complete 3D beginner. Thank you!

importing blender files in blender

Postby Menian Lee » Fri Dec 04, 2009 11:00 pm

What's the trick?

I had an external teacher on Blender and he directed me to this forum and topic, when I couldn't import blender objects in blender.
I'm on XP, Blender 2,49b, Python 2.6.4.
When I try to import blender file, I choose 3ds as format, and in the console the message is Fatal Error: Not a valid 3ds file

If this is not a valid file format for blender files, what it is? There is no .blender format to choose from in import options.

A .blend is not a 3ds file, simple as that. For native blender files use File->Open. No trick involved.

File - open, just open in the same window and removes the previous info
Shift + F1 worked for me - thanks to

May be I should have searched more before writing here
Cheers

It would not hurt to take a quick skim thru the manual or one of the intro guides. This stuff is pretty basic to using Blender.

I'm a newbie and I'm trying to open a 3Ds file (converted using the Autodesk fbx converter into 3ds from an fbx exported in Maya) but I am getting the same error message - Not a valid 3ds file.

OBJECT_MESH = long('0x4100',16); # This lets us know that we are reading a new object
I have blender v2.49.2.
What do I have to do? (wew, this doesn't sounds like good english, I'm dutch :P)

For Blender 2.49 (old blender), you need to install Python. Use the version Blender asks for at startup. - usually 2.5 or so. Other versions will not work.

Note that new Blender (2.64) comes with its own copy of Python 3.
