Hello,
It might be a good idea to have a DVD in the e-shop with the animation of the Blender Art Festival... Some people don't have a DVD writer, and still want to be able to view it on their DVD equipment (like me, unfortunately).
I would be willing to cash out 15 EUR for it, for example. If there is enough demand, that might be feasible.
any comments on this?

1.) you do not need a dvd writer to watch an iso.*
2.) would be nice anyway. with some special material though...

Or at least we could organise a 'network' of people who can burn it - when I return home to Sydney, I'd be happy to burn and mail some copies of the DVD locally for the cost of the media/postage.

Would need to make sure there are both PAL and NTSC versions. Burning the ISO for me doesn't work as it is PAL and wont play in any of my DVD players.

Good idea. I don't know if there is a chance to have an 'official' DVD from the conference... I don't know what material is available, and how much time it would take to master it for DVD. Some of the sessions on the conference would be great as tutorials for example. The Advanced Animation was packed, so there is definitely an interest.
Just dreaming though, but it
would be nice.

This could be expanded to a reseller network!
You know like creating blender-fan stuff (dvd's for example) and sell them all over the world through members of the "blender reseller network". anyone likes the idea? We could join up with blenderman.org for example and trough this it'd be "easily" possible to sell a real blendermag.

There are 2 things to keep separate:
1. The BAF movie. Blender Art Festival 2004 (Suzanne Award)
2. The BC movies. Blender Conference 2004.
The BAF is downloadeble from the web as a bitTorrent and as far as I know free to copy. So plans like broken has are great. Maybe this still can go truw the e-shop. That could handle money matters (the one doing the work would actualy get paid for postal stamps, burnables and envelopes, and maybe a soda?). Just take it up with Ton, I'm sure he has an answer.
The BC was taped by more then 4 people, I was one of them.
But this is a more difficult matter, I taped 36 hours of conference.
I will turn all I have into mpeg1 video files, some have poor sound

They will all be downloadable as bitTorrent from blender3d.org.
How to share that? Specialy for low/non bandwith people.
36 hours of dvd-player compatible dvd's would mean 18 burnables.
I think on a 4.3Gb dvd-r fits 6 hours of mpeg1.
Any ideas on that?

If raw unedited material is of any interest: I've taped the first conference which was very, very special and I still don't know whether to abandon those tapes or keep it for some future application.

I know it'd be a hell of a lot of work (and maybe not feasible) to re-encode from MPEG1, but MPEG1's not exactly the most efficient format. You could get significant improvements from using DivX or MPEG4, particularly since if I'm not mistaken the susbsequent-frame-compression-thingie is far superior than MPEG1, which would be good for source footage without much movement, like the talks...
Perhaps it may be a good idea for someone with the footage to do some tests and comparions with sample sections of the original DV, with different codecs and settings?

About Mpeg1.
It's today possibly the worst compression there is.
But,... It's a standard that is widely spread.
DivX and Mpeg4 will give more trouble for everyone to be able to playback (I'm not sure thats a real sentence, but you know what I mean).
So its a choice for compatibility, not compression quality.
Maybe I can do it both. DivX and Mpeg1.
That would take lot's more compression time.
