In your (yes, you the reader) opinion, what is the best format to render individual frames in (.jpg, .gif, .png) as far as quality and render speed is concerned?
Just wondering.

I would say that speed is not really a factor in selecting image format
for output. If your wanting the best quality you probably want EXR
your going to get larger files though with that.
If your concerned with filesize for output I would go with jpg...
If you need alpha though jpg will not cut it so you could go with png...
Use what works for you...

How would you go about making the "world" transparent so that your object was sitting on a transparent layer with a PNG or GIF?
Is it even possible?
Thanks.

I"d go with png since jpg is lossy... or exr if you need to manipulate layers and may need high bit depth (ie if you want to change lightness/darkness of the image in post production...).

Make sure you have rgba clicked instead of rgb and select png and you
should be all set.

I prefer PNG because its easier to save the alpha channel to make transparent backgrounds. For house renderings I make the background transparent then add background scenes with photoshop.
