Asset Management?

does anyone know of a free asset management system?

I'd like:

- to drop images, textures, objects, texts, and everything into a database
- to search the database for inherent and explicitly given criteria, like
type, name, size, histogram
- to have versioning and configuration management, so that one object
can have several instances, one of which might be linked to version X
of project A, another instance might be linked to the english language
flavour of version Y, and so on
- a Developer's view: "Here's a scene name: show me a list of all objects
used in this scene to give me a quick overview",
- a Graphic designer's view: "Show me all bricks used in version X,
alphabetically sorted. Ah yes, show me the details for this piece;
right, here's an update I'd like to upload" - and the piece automagically
shows up in the developer's view - or better yet, in the nightly build ...
- Preferably with a web-interface, so it's platform independent and
doesn't need a special client software, and
- maybe it could batch-parse uploaded gimp- and blender-files to
automagically extract new versions of parts?

This is a hell of a lot, I know. I've spent several months now on a project involving about 30 people - and about 100 graphics parts, a few hundred text properties, and everything 2D-only. Even then, keeping track of the versions, then inventing two or three flavours with just subtle differences, and dragging specifications behind you seems like one big, well, chaos.

CVS is good for source code - what do them graphics geeks use?

Any hints appreciated!

Weeell... if there's nothing remotely like it, I might join in making something, but I'm afraid I can't dedicate much time to it.

AFAIK No such beast. We've been looking for/building something like this but it a very big problem. Not to mention that it's form depends on the structure of the company that deploys it.

Nice list of requirements though.

The only software like what you are talking about that I know of is from
Unfortunately its not free.... I would love to see an open source competitor to such a program start. I've also tried to use CVS with a project but for users that know very little of programming or command line tools it can be quite a hassle... I've also had the issue of several types of files not being stored correctly in CVS like wings files and the like.

Alienbrain doesn't even come close to doing what miracle asked for. I was asked to eval it & well it didn't quite live up to expectations.

Oh and that's my personal opinion not my employers

Its still the closest thing there is out there to use on multimedia / 3D projects.
