Snap Menu, new 5th option in wrong place..

Postby thorax » Fri May 16, 2003 2:08 am

Shift-Snap menu, I use the numbers 1 thru 4 in previous blenders
to access the 1st,2nd,3rd,or 4th options in snap menu immediately
after typing Shift-S. Its a trick that has been in blender for years,
since Ton released it I guess..

Now there is a 5th option and its smack-dab in the middle of the menu,
throwing option 3 and 4 off..

So when I do Shift-S+4 then c, it instead move the Cursor to the Grid
and centers on that, rather than moving the Cursor to the selected object
and centering on that.. I use Shift-S4 c a lot.. In fact my tutorials outline its use, This was a feature in blender from the very start, in fact Ton was the one who told me about the feature.. Its amazing nobody ever uses it since I can center really quickly on anything with it.. Some of those who really use the hot-keys in the snap menu may be thrown a little off by this feature..

The solution is simply to put the new option (Sel-Center) in the 5th
place.. What Selection->Center does I have no idea, I usually
just edit the object, hit a (select all), get out of edit mode and hit "c" to center the view on the relative center of the object..

Again

Sel -> Grid
Sel -> Curs
Sel -> Center
Curs -> Grid
Curs -> Sel

should be

Sel -> Grid
Sel -> Curs
Curs -> Grid
Curs -> Sel
Sel->Center
------

I figured the Tuhopuu release would be the only one to make this mistake but it looks like it made its way into 2.27 .

If I'm the only one affected by this error, then I guess I can reprogram my hands..

Part of the reason I'm writing tutorials is so that features like this
don't get forgotten.. Another option would be to allow users to orient
and add to popup menus as they please.. Like features could be
offered in snap menu to use Python scripts to realign the cursor, like
snap cursor to curve, etc..

I wasn't the one who added this, but I'll take a guess and say most likely the reason it was done this way is that it's better to slightly break 'backwards familiarity' once in a while and keep a logical structure, than it is to end up with an unorganised mess. If options, buttons etc. were just added to the end of lists or wherever there's space, Blender would quickly become even more unstructured and illogical than it is now. It seems the benefits of keeping things organised (especially for new users too) outweigh the negative aspects - and like you said, hopefully your hands will reprogram too :)
