I just installed blender and am very impressed but cant figure out how I can save rendered images as bitmaps or jpegs or the like,I know this probably really easy but I just cant seem to crack it ,all I get are unviewable files.Can some one point me in the right direction ????

You need to add the extension .JPG to the end of file name.
