Somebody mentioned on the durian blog that there was a lot of oneupmanship on the presenting side, with the t-shirts and so on, and whilst I agree, as this is not how I would do it for work, I can understand it, in that the way a competition works it does leave a gap in the normal way a designer communicates with a client. I thought about the situation briefly and felt a bit stupid after, normally when doing logo options for someone I would talk them through it! This is the first time I've had a chance to sit down and look at it in a while, I've tweaked the logo to a point where I am completely happy with it, after designing it in blender there where quite a few things that needed tweaking in inkscape.

I'll bring you through a few of the main elements behind the logo.

The S in this logo symbolizes a dragon, with its jagged spine plates. It is subtle, and the reason behind that is I want the logo to say, the likes of dragons belong in this short, not that this short is necessarily about dragons (Partly because I don't know the story, partly because from what I've heard the story will have some symbolism or depth of some kind). The Flame dotting the I reenforces this. And also gives the logo itself a symbol to reduce it from being solely a typographic logo. (It is placed and touches roughly twice the x height of the letters - just saying that for all the design nerds). Another choice I made was to mimic the town we have seen a few times from david and a few test renders, It reminded me of overlaying canopies and with dragons lending themselves to an asian persuasion I used the T and E to form a relationship of overlaying canopies and the oriental style ascending gutters. Lastly the degraded look of the logo lends itself both to a dragons texture and to that of ink on an old scroll. In other words how I think the logo would look done in the sintel world. I find that to be an interesting thing to aim for because it ensures the logo's relation with the content.

Ok thats me done, good luck to everyone! Really enjoying seeing all the different perspectives on this!

Here's my contribution. My appologies - I'm not sure if my images are getting through.

Wow, I like this! The simplicity sure is the way to go

I would love to see it placed in the context of the Sintel artwork like lots of people have already done

Hi,

Just got 30 sec to do that now ;)

I really like this one, kaboing. It has potential! The only elements that distract are the 't' and the 'l'. I feel the 't' tilts a tad far to the right and needs a simpler crossbar, while the 'l' doesn't seem to fit with the feel of the rest - almost like a tacked on afterthought from another font family. One more refinment level could bring this one to the forefront, IMO. Good work!

I've taken liberties with the spelling and phonetics of the movie's title for a number of reasons...

- Syndel sounds and looks more 'old world' than Sintel
- makes it more plausible as a person's name
- avoids association with Intel and any consequent jokes
- the Y and D letter forms are more attractive in context and a little more robust than I and T
- consider that Tao Te Ching is often spelt Dao De Jing
- the logotype could still work well in this lettering style with the original spelling

In the phrase 'Blender Open Movie Project' the word Project struck me as being redundant.

The symbol is not really necessary, but if it gets chosen to be used then I would further refine it.

EDIT: poster draft image added to show logotype design in a working context...

It's mainly calligraphy work, made with Inkcape, Linux and a Wacom tablet
