Hi I'm a new user to ubuntu and I downloaded blender 2.53 it seemed to work fine until I changed game rendering to glsl and then when I tried to chage the scene into textured mode
blender just closes
any ideas? thank you for your time

Likely your video card & driver don't like that. You might try turning off compiz.

I tried to do it like you said but blender still shuts down
I think that maybe could be related with the python package installed in my ubuntu
It's 3.1 do you know if there's any newer versions for ubuntu?

well, I tried installing blender 2.49 from ubuntu software center and it works great
all the options and features are available, I tried changing the game rendering to glsl and then changing the scene to textured and it works fine
maybe it's a bug from blender 2.53 release it self or the whole python thing
post something if you can find anything that solves the problem

Unlikely to be a python problem. Try playing with your OpenGL settings in the User Prefs.
