Commercial game done with Blender & playing MIDI?

Is there *any* commercial game made with Blender?
Examples & links would be usefull.

Just asking, I want to know if Blender have any gaming history.

Is the v2.25 can play MIDI? Or I must 'Ogg Vorbis' all my MIDI to be used as background music?

Is 2.25 stable enough for real indie commercial game production?

Can I control background rendering - you know - to create games like Resident Evil 1 & 2. You know, 3D on 2D. The idea to render in the same app which later you use to create the game is a really cool!

The only Commerical Games made in blender that I know are the ones made by NAN

In 2.25 blender can play wav, mp3 and .ogg (though some ogg files seema bit buggy)

2.25 can not play midi directly but there a script to play it for you. Midi script

Can I control background rendering - you know - to create games like Resident Evil 1 & 2. You know, 3D on 2D. The idea to render in the same app which later you use to create the game is a really cool!


I actrally just made a simple demo using prerendered images, although its not 3d on 2d its a technique (just build an invisable 3d scene over various planes with rendered 3d images) plus I am sure Resident Evil used pixel collision rather then actrally building an invisable 3d scenes)

No, Blender can only use PCM .Wav files. It does not support mp3. They were planning to make mp3 work before NaN went bankrupt. And there are no real commercial games made with blender, although you could argue that the gamekit has commercial blendergames packed with it(because you paid for them, duh).

The gameengine is only a few years old anyway, and it's only lately that people have come up with more commercial-like games. Dracolith (http://www.brainstorm-studios.net/index.htm) and Crescent Dawn (http://www.spinheaddev.com/?id=crescentdawn) are both made by teams of people.

background rendering :) what a great idea.

totally possible in blender might take some planing tho you need to set up low poly enviroment for colission and shadows and stuff but its totally doable.

Actually monkeyboi, 2.25 can play .mp3 files. I have done it before. However, it can be quite picky as to the format of the mp3 files it can use. I don't know if anyone knows the correct format, but if you try a bunch of mp3s, eventually you should find one that works. Find out what format it is and we'll know blender can read it. My old fantasy isle trailer used an mp3 from the signs soundtrack: http://www.spinheaddev.com/downloads/fsteaser.zip

Also, blengine made a really nice monkey island demo that looked as good as Escape from Monkey island, and uses a similar effect as that of resident evil. That's a very doable method, and due to the low polygon requirements for such a game, probably one of the better methods to go for in blender, at least until some of the engines speed issues can be worked on.

Commercial games are quite possible, but besides the game engine none have been made as of yet. I intend Crescent Dawn to be commercial quality, but as it takes most companies with 20+ developers 2-3 years to make a commercial quality game, it will probably take us, a team of 2, a bit longer than that. However, the shareware market is booming recently, with small high quality games such as those put out by popcap or garagegames, and blender is QUITE capable of games such as those.

I think if we all got together and worked on small simple games, we could possibly garner more attention to blender development.

Wow you are right, it does play mp3s! It just doesn't display them in the Audio Timeline.. This is really cool. As far as I can see it plays most mp3s.. I couldn't get info on different types though. Sorry for being so sure it wasn't possible!

Heh, that happens all the time with blender :) Many times I've thought something worked, then I find out it doesnt, or thought something doesnt work, then find out it did.
