Importing Pictures

Im sorry if this is the wrong forum, because i dont know which one is the right forum. How do i get pictures in because iv tryed open then to pictures/desktop, iv tryed import but it when i hover my cursor over it it makes a list that has VRML 1.0..., DXF..., STL..., i dont know what these mean so can someoene pleas tell me what to do to be able to get an image in to blender.

can someone pleas help me i have been waiting for a reply for over two weeks and i really want some advise on what to do so pleas someone help me pleas

I suspect no one replied because it is not clear what you are trying to do. Blender is not the GIMP (or that other image editor from Adobe).

Do you want an image as a background picture? An image as a texture? An Image for UV Texturing? Something else?

Note: scripts under the Import menu are used to convert data files from other 3d software into something Blender can use.

i am asking how you would for example put an image of a gun on so i can make a gun or to put a random image or texture on a surface because im not sure how or if i just cant because maybe something messed up with the download

These are all different features in Blender and are accessed through different means. Each one is explained in the documentation and by video tutorials. Repeating it all here would be a waste of time.

You really need to spend a little time looking at one of the quick start guides so you can ask better questions.
