Are you running the spacenav driver? (or the one from 3dconnexion?)

Currently you must hold down 'shift' to move up/dn/lf/rt.
The current 3d Mouse support is very rudimentary and Mike Erwin is working on refining it.
Items being worked on include:
1) translation without keyboard modifier (forward/back/left/right/up/down without shift)
2) center of rotation around selection
3) button support for devices other than the Space Navigator which only has 2.

The spacenav driver, while a windows version does exist, is mainly an open source driver for spacemice under linux. You can even use the 'obsolete' serial spacemice with linux + spacenav.
As for a time frame, I have no idea. All I know is that those items were brought to his attention, and he said that he was working on them.
He posted this, just earlier today when asked about reversing the zoom axis for NDOF devices..

| I'm still interested in this, and had planned to work on this sort of stuff once 2.60 was out and things settled down. Thanks for reminding me what to fix first! |
So it looks like he was waiting for the Blender API to stabilize before investing a lot of time tweaking his code. This is good news!

Example? I have not seen it leave holes in solid forms using boolean diff.

Blender 2.5x+ is a complete overhaul of Blender. That is why many features that were in 2.4x are not fully implemented yet.
