Hi!
Have a look at my experimental work on minimalistic widgets for button panels:

Please tell me what you like and/or dislike about it!

hi thorwil,
I think you might have something there, though I 'm not quite for the look
It is true it inproves the readability of the text, but the mixing of buttons with rounded corners and square ones doesn't feel/look ok
It kindof reminded me of softimage in a way...

yo pinhead_66,
is the mixing of rounded and hard edges your only problem with the look?
Besides a variation of the shape the only other sensible solution would be classic checkboxes or something similar. Or to entirely move away from the button thing ans use checkboxes with labels. Must not be a change in target area size, since the labels can be clickable too, but it just looks like only checkboxes are clickable. And it might be harder to tell the state quickly.
However, when I'm satisfied with the general design of the widgets, one might say their architecture, I might try just a little touch of eyecandy.
