Hey all!
First post and I hope this is in the right place!
I'm working on a scimitar for a game in Unity 3D. So far I've completed the Low Poly version and I'm at a loss as to how to detail it.
I ask this in the artistic and literal sense
As in what would you detail it with? (engraving)
And how exactly WOULD you detail it? (floating geometry, sculpting?)
In case you guys want to show me rather than tell me
here's a download link to the Blend file!
Here are some screenies in case you don't want to show

I think the usual way to detail an object without adding to its geometry is to stick a texture with a normal map on it.

First, you seem to have some odd triangles/quads at some places, you should go over it an extra time to try to clean it up a bit.
I would make suitable edge creases and apply a subsurf

Then I would add a black and white bumpmap, to which you draw some cool patterns, add it to the texture of the sword material and have it render as normals
And at least, I would bake a glorious normal map of the smoothed, bumpmapped sword on to the lowpoly model.
(possible sculpt some details on the handle)
