Hello I am a new user. I have used several other 3d engines in the past but they always came up limitations. Offcourse every engine must have his limits but I was just wondering what the limit of blender would be?
I haven't read thru the docs or anything yet but I was just looking for a few quick answers.

what is the maximum number of entities? (entities are 3d objects/elements that can be assigned a individual script )

Is there also direct 3d support?

How good is blender compared to the cheap commercial engines such as 3Dgamestudio 3DRAD Blitz3D DarkBasic and other free engines like crystal space fly 3d etc?

Hello psicocybin

Blender is a "generalist" game engine.
Graphically at the top, but very down in fps's
Entities don't exist in Blender.
Forget your BSP technologies engines
Blender is WYSYWYG engine Smile
No more VIS or Compile. You do, you play, instantly Smile
That's why he's so slow
I guess we can't do a "big and serious" game with
Blender, but for show your ideas to the others
with high-quality graphics Blender is perfect.
Please , go to the www.elYsiun.com for questions
about the game engine.
The comunity is around there
Bye
António

you can easily do big serious games in blender. im workin on a big serious RPG at the moment and blenders fine for my purposes. Smile

the physics engine and the logic bricks allow you to easily make a simple game in WYSIWYG but if you combine this with blenders support for Python scripting then literally the only limits are your imagination, cos you could achieve almost any effect or event using python. Very Happy

That's not true. The "low" fps is due to that the engine needs alittle optimations. Thought I never get bad FPS in it Very Happy . Blenderpublisher is alot faster than old 2.23 too.

As far as an entity limit, it really depends on how MUCH script or logic you give to them. THe more logic, the more your going to slow down, scripts on the other hand are usually pretty fast. But there seems to be almost a set limit of about 300 entities maximum from my tests before it starts to slow down, if all the entities are very BASIC. It also depends a lot on the computer you run it on as well. But as the engine gets optomized, it will get better and faster:)

If you are one with it's limitations, you can easily do a serious game with Blender, but as far as graphical power and speed go it's a bit on the low end of things.

Most Pro game engines (Quake-Half Life ...) compile to pre-calculate visible
or invisible polygons, lights shadows, and other things.
That's why they're faster.
Blender don't need compilation. Once it's made you press P and you're in "PLAY" mode.

You don't need extra apps now.
BLENDER PUBLISHER is available FREE for all.
Just download it here in the site.
You can make .EXE with it.
But no compile Smile

Yes, i understand you very well.
Make a game, even a little and not serious one, is a long task.
I guess that a "pro" company took Blender to make a game, maybe they
succeed, maybe??!!
But i guess that even "pros" don't know if they "can do it"
That's why they took Quake 3 engine.
That way they know!!
