Got an old salvaged Windows XP Home Edition computer a few months ago, internet wouldn't work on Windows so I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it. Long story short when I tried to run Blender 2.56b the screen goes black, and the only way I can go back to the desktop is by shutting the computer off, and restarting.

I love the Blender 2.5 series, and would prefer to avoid Blender 2.49- Any help on getting Blender 2.56b to run would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my system specs.

My money is on questionable OpenGL support on an ancient Intel graphics chipset.

Tehrasha wins the prize!

Now the question is what to do about it. The simplest solution is go buy a cheap nVidia card and stick it in the machine, assuming it is not an un-upgradable laptop.
