I am just watching a tutorial on YouTube where the author is using an older version of the knife tool.

Could anybody please take a look at this video

at 13:18 he is doing a knife midpoints cut, and neighboring face (which was NOT selected) is split in 2 (or it got a new vertex, sorry, I don't know how to describe it).

With Blender 2.64 I can not achieve this, the neighboring face stays perfectly intact, but I would need to have it split as in this version.

Can somebody help?

Hi,

You can access the knife tool with shortcut "k" on Edit Mode. But in 2.6x it lost some functionality from the predecessor. You still could use "k" then press "Ctrl/Command" to achieve Mid Point snap, but no intersection/at point cut.

HOPEFULLY full functionality of knife cut tool come back again as in 2.4x !!!
