Should I use blender for this animation?

Postby stewkingjr » Sat Oct 27, 2012 7:07 pm

I'm looking for a platform to model and animate Rube Goldberg-esque machines. While i *could* do it using java 3d, i'd much prefer to have a platform handle a lot of the grunt work for me. I'm also reasonably fluent in python if that becomes a factor.

The real question: Is blender a reasonable platform for this? If not, any suggestions on what might be better?
TIA,
-stew

would this be something like a domino effect, one initial force which triggers an action and a sequence of energy releases happens (a stone falls down and makes a ball roll, which kicks off something else...)?

could be done with blender i guess, using physics simulation. You may be interested into Bullet-integration, which was a this year's GSoC project.

@CoDEmanX Thanks for the reply. Yea, that's the kind of animation i mean. I'll look into the bullet thing. Blender looks like it could do a lot of things, but i just want to make sure i'm not trying to force fit something that really shouldn't be done on blender.

with Bullet, Blender will be pretty good for such a thing i guess!

next official blender release, 2.65, will have it integrated. Planned release is early December this year. But you can already test it out, download builds at http://graphicall.org (search for "bullet" and look for "Bullet Integration" in title)
