Internaly Im told that blenders renderer use floating point.
SO higher bit rates could be possible.
Im not sure what the heck you mean bt dithered 16bit
16bit colour channels?
16bits per pixel.
If its the latter then use some external image processing tool.

if your in 24 bits or 32 bits you can tell the difference

This could be the rendered output to the display, making the bands. Id need to test for the bands.
Your could be right.
.. Sombody with more time can look into it.
Good point though... I noteced this a while ago- switched to 24 bit.
