I've come across so much information that I don't know anymore. At the time of my writting this, is there or is there not an importer and/or exporter for FBX files?

Blender has an Exporter
If you want to import you can use Autodesk's free FBX converter to make it into an OBJ but you lose animations

I think we're all wanting a .fbx importer, however from everything I have read, the problem is that it's simply not legal to make one. Autodesk has there stuff licensed good and tight, and I don't blame them. They gotta make money for all their work.

So if someone were to make one, they could be fined a large amount of money, or even thrown in jail.

However, it is a huge setback not being able to import the file format used by almost every model you can buy on other websites. Autodesk does seem to have a monopoly in some respects.

I tried the GSOC bratwurst branch and I found no .fbx importer whatsoever. Of course, I am knew to these Blender branches in general so I may not have set it up correctly, who knows.

i wished FBX was made an open standard, since collada doesn't seem to work that well...

here are the user docs of the bratwurst fbx importer (using assimp):
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Aramis_acg/FBX2012-UserDoc

Bratwurst builds are available at graphicall:
http://graphicall.org/blender/?keywords=bratwurst

btw.
you are certainly interested into this addon as well (Another FBX im-/exporter):

Hey Codeman thanks for the links.

I think I'm running everything correctly, but I'm still not seeing the import .fbx option.

I downloaded the Blender GSOC Bratwurst x64 branch from graphicall.org. I unzipped the file. Then I ran the .exe that comes with it. Is that all I need to do? The branch runs fine. There's just simply not a .fbx import option.

I can export .fbx, but no import.

Nice Smile

That one does have the .fbx import option, which is very cool, thanks.

However, I tried opening a couple .fbx files and it threw me an error every time and wouldn't load the file.

However, when I do the "open asset import library" option, I can load in the model from a different file extension, however the animations are still not working correctly.

So overall I'd say it almost works, but needs major improvements. And I wasn't actually able to open a .fbx file.... but at least people are getting close.

i tried to build the latest revision of the bratwurst branch, which might have some fixes for fbx import, but it fails for several reasons. r52104 compiles, but no assimp/fbx option?!
