I had some deform problems that just could not be fixed. Example, I moved a leg bone and part of the chest on the opposite side of the mesh deformed. Weight paint showed no weight on the verticies and would not subtract them.
So I deleted the armature in object mode but it still shows in my outliner. I thought, well maybe it is because the vertex groups are still in place, so I deleted all the vertex groups. No joy, it is still in my outliner, I tried right clicking it in the outliner, no option to delete.
If I add a new armature I then have two in my outliner.
Never mind, I found the answer. Here it is, The armature was still in my modifiers, I simply clicked the X. Back to work experimenting with my mesh.
