Hello
You must be more precise with your questions!
You need a completely transparent character (invisible)
Or a translucide one, with texture
Anyway, to have "see trough" character, make a new image in the Gimp
with, let's say 50% opacity and save it in TGA format without compression.
In Blender, select all your faces and UV texture them with the above texture,
press the alpha button and the Copy Draw mode button.
Is this clear?
Bye

Yeahh, you're talking to town's idiot!!
ADD button only work in the "perfect black" zones
So in the Gimp select the blue area and make it black 0, 0, 0
This way the black areas will be transparent in Blender
Bye

Nice the "black" with red characters
Sorry to bother you trying to help you!!!
To get rid of the damn blue, just disable mist!!!!
Now you'll get a bit weird tree, with add!!
To get the real tree colours open the image in Gimp, carefully
select the black make it transparent, save in TGA and use Alpha in Blender.

Here you find gimp:
http://www.gimp.org/
It's developed under linux, but there should be a windows version too.
Have fun.
