Hello
you've to use, at least, some Logic Bricks ( Motion type Actuators)
Or just get the FPS template to "play" a little!

Hello
Blender is a democratic software...this way you and I we're on the same level, even if I own a poor GFX 9500! ;)

Sorry I can't help you...maybe the Blender GE isn't just optimized for high-end hardware?

Hello
"Performance"? Bad!
Use other Game Engine!
Anyway, if you work alone, Blender is, most probably, enough for the task!

Hello
well, normally you could control the roll ...in Front view, maybe...
Or, convert the Curve to a Mesh and "roll" it a bit with the Proportional tool?
Or, make a complete tube and assign "invisible property" to the top faces?

Hello
select your character object and set "Physics" to "No collision"!
Do the same for the "Armature" if you've a "Bounding box" ( or something like that)!

Hello

10,000x10,000 size textures?
Me I like to use 512, 256 for little/far/tiled objects and one or two 1024 ( terrain?)!
Well, with your super computer you could try some 4056x4056 ones, but keep in mind that if you'll share your file most people can't run it!

Hello
no need to be an expert to answer your basic question ( already answered a million times I guess?)!

As stiv stated above UV textured objects should work in Single Texture mode!
In Multi Texture or GLSLyou must add a Texture ( image) to the Material of the object!
