To include it i...

The maintenance of blender was probably dropped when windows announced that it would stopp supporting the Alpha processors, but Compaq still sells Alpha based super computers and workstations.. It was a linux distro for the alpha, not windows, even though it ran fine on NT 4.0 (using FX32). I was r...

At one time it was compiled for DEC alpha, up to blender version 2.14 I think, so it shouldn't be that hard to get it to compile on a different 64 bit arch.
The maintaince of blender for the alpha was dropped when DEC sold out.

Using a color image does work, but I always seem to get better results using a gray scale image, it's easier to adjust the brightness and contrast with the gray than it is with color, just has more adjustability.

Possible feature for the Materials/Texture window

A button (with code of course;) to change an image texture to a gray scale image for use as a bump map, with out having to open an external image editing program to convert (to gray scale) and save a new image. Add material Add an image texture Add the image texture in the next texture slot Change (...

While waiting for a solution and/or building your own - have a look at the PovRay exporter by jms -> http://www.elysiun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10372 It seems very capable. It's a very nice script, but don't bother if you have OS X, no scripts that have GUI's (use the BGL module) work on OS X, yet.
