As someone who has only used Blender for little over a year, I found that it only leaves established standards in very few places (unlike ZBrush, for example, where you get the suspicion that the software was written by aliens). The mouse + selection rectangle thing may be a pretty visible, though, ...

Thumbnail Background Color

Hi! It's really useful that Blender saves a thumbnail of the model with each *.blend file and displays it via a shell extension. In the earlier 2.6x versions (I think up to 2.62 or 2.63 maybe) the background of these thumbnails was white, which was perfect. Now (2.65 and 2.66 at least), it's black, ...

I've tried it with some dummy objects a few times just to get the hang of it. You seem to have already picked up that the "F" button is vital. Another thing I noticed is that pressing I (insert keyframe) takes a snapshot of the currently selected bones in their currently positions and saves it. If y...

The most detailed information I could find so far is here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Data_System/Linked_Libraries But it states that Armature linking is "work in progress" as of Blender 2.43 - not exactly helpful. Still, I've got the feeling that my setup should work. The only...

Weird behavior in linked mesh w/Armature

I'm working on a game with several characters. Up until now, I've kept each model in its own .blend file with its own actions (animations). Now I want to create some animations that involve interaction between multiple characters. For example, a sword fight between the hero and the evil lord or a cr...

I figured out that I can select all connected vertices of a mesh by pressing Ctrl+L with the mouse over it.

If it helps, I have illustrated my workflow in 3DS Max in this article: How to Rig a Model in 3DS Max.

It shows the element selection I was talking about and some other cool stuff I haven't found yet in Blender (like the Skin Weight Table - a real lifesaver for animation of mechanical stuff)

Relationships Vertex Groups <-> Bones

Hi! I'm trying apply bone animation to some simple mechanical turrets (so my vertex weights will all be either 0.0 or 1.0 - no elastic parts). In 3DS Max, I was able to select which bones will actually be used by the vertices (and which ones are merely supporting bones or used as attachment points),...

Thank you, that did the trick.

I looked precisely for such an option, but that little checkbox escaped me until you spelled it out ;-)

Loaded old Blender 2.4 scene, UI rearranged

Hi! I'm currently learning Blender via the CG Cookie video tutorials and I'm happy having just reached the point where I'm able to do some basic modelling in Blender 2.58. Now I tried to edit some models created in Blender 2.4x, but whenever I load those .blend files, my UI is rearranged to look lik...
