I do not know Blender much but I have done similar with max and photoshop. My workflow would be something like this..... Create your master image using what you prefer. I like Photoshop. I created an character for someone. I added an armature and weighted the mesh. All seems to be good except.....when I created the mesh I did so with the arms stretched out horizontal.
