The only way that I know is with the c key or the laso tool. I prefer the c key. I dont think that there is another way for now. Quite late answer but you can render opengl (it is an option on top) and then hit the play buton next to it. It is a very simple quick render in order to check if your animation works. Actually the same as in maya. This will play your animation in loop in another window.

As far as I know bvh works with retargeting the bones to other bones. This means that is better to build your armature for your character and bind it to the mesh.
