I think it's just prejudice Or just my ignorance. disclaimer: long time since I was involved in Win development. My understanding that some of the free MS compiler versions do not do 64 bits. OpenCOLLADA is fixed now and I submitted 4 patches that were committed by Brecht today. So most of the build errors are gone with latest sources from trunk. GHOST Win32 is fixed, I think.

Patches, libs and test builds are available at my site ;)

Next step: Fix libmv and OpenCOLLADA :D

But I am really stuck now I need help from someone who's deep into Win32 programming to solve this ghost issue. But with GSoC and Blender 2.67 in BCon4 I think the devs don't really have time to spend on this.

Another status update. After a very productive chat with kaito on #blendercoders I found some odd behaviour of GHOST. When compiled with VS 2012 and run on Windows 8 GHOST seems to get a WM_ACTIVATE message before the windows is fully initialized and tries to process the message. I had no luck findi...

It's me again ;) I did it.... Sort of... Today blender gave up resistance and built fine with VS2012 Express. All fine, I just had to deactivate WITH_OPENCOLLADA WITH_LIBMV WITH_CYCLES_CUDA_BINARIES so far no problems, unless you try to run it on Windows 8. Blender crashes immediately on startup. Se...

Blender uses its own Toolkit called GHOST afaik. GHOST can utilize SDL for windows creation but by default it uses native libraries like Win32 on windows.
