De-selecting all with single click

Hi! I just wanted to know if there is a way to de-select all the selected objects without having to press 'A'. I makes me so nervous having to press that key instead of clicking anywhere on the viewport. I mean like I would do in e.g. 3dsmax, I would click on an empty area an that'd be all.

Hi! I'm new to Blender, I used to use 3dsmax, and I decided to give Blender a chance. My question is: is there any way to smooth a mesh without having to deal with thousands of polygons?
