In Edit mode, if you look at the Mesh Analysis panel in the 3D View Properties Panel and choose the Type: Thickness, you can choose the range of thicknesses that you want to trace with the mesh analysis. I'm biased, but Blender 3D Basics is good for the complete beginner, taking a lot of time and care to teach how to use the Blender interface. It then goes on to basic modeling and animation techniques.

Well, I figured out part of the question.

Bad contiguous edges are where the normals of two polygons that share an edge face in opposite directions; an inside facing polygon next to an outside facing polygon.

At least its documented now.

Still puzzled by the samples.
