One horizontal rectangle plus one vertical rectangle, you get a cross. I add one horizontal image plus one vertical image, I get one straight line. Either one of the image I add had been scale up or down. Why?

There are two image, size are 990 x 547 and 547 x 990, add background image for modeling, the 990 x 547 fit in the 547 x 990, why? Did I do something wrong?

Background image size

The problem here is the car in the image, the car left side, the front is facing the left so is the top. How I got this idea

I don't know how to use Blender or any other modeling software. I don't know all the function and when I want to model something, I'm not too sure if the technique is right. So first I outline the background image with the cube, then overlap with another cube to make a reference and this is how I go...

Overlap mesh converting to one mesh

When you overlap mesh you will see a shape in the middle. Can this be made into one mesh by combining the two mesh.

Example: one vertical rectangle overlap one horizontal rectangle, square in the middle.
