Hm. I don't think that I will find any time soon, to dig into the architecture of blender. I was hoping that there is a simple way for those, who are already familiar with that, know an easy way to implement such a functionality. I'm teaching kids, pupils, beginners in general, in doing some modeling and animation work. Holding the shift key while right-clicking on the vertices, lines or faces to select multiple vertices etc. is sufficient to me when using 2.49b.

If the shift key is what you call the select key then it should work for you as well.

Did you something change in the User Preferences?
