i have sevral ideas
idea 1
since the aurora is a plasma particles would work great you can try fluid particles also you can use fields to influence particles

you could use ribbons of mesh with transparency enabled and paint them

i just built a wind tunnel Sim with the fluid physics particles it was so cool i hope that you guys keep developing this area also if anyone else has used particles for fluids post interesting things you find hear

i cant stand it volumes have so much potential but its essential that they can cast shadows

just to make this more clear
basically as long as you buy a workstation chuck it full of memory give it a good graphics card a good quad core etc.. you can make huge mesh files no problems like stuff the size you see in movies hypotheticly

feature request for volumes casting shadows on each other
after using volumes and reading up on them a bit I learned that they don't seem to cast shadows on each other but volumes have so much potential especially solid volumes as seen in a post on blender nation please fix this

i am closing this thread for 2 reasons 1 64 bit solves the entire problem 2 this idea i suggested could not be implamented because hard drives have too slow a speed

you did help me though by verifying that 64 bit will solve my problems sorry i couldn't i guess i don't know enough about computers i plan to make the switch to 64 bit this summer but i wanted to help people who couldn't afford to

check if your graphics card is supported
not all graphics cards work well with blender it needs a card with good openGL support for a list of good cards see the specs page for windows on the blender website also if you are using an alpha version and this did not help report it as a bug anyone can sign up to be a bug reporter you don't have...

one thing i always notice is that because blender has to hold the entire file in ram while working on it the bigger it gets the slower everything gets perhaps there might be a way to store all mesh information on the hard drive until it was needed at witch time it could be loaded back into ram for e...
