Re: How does Blender do flat shading?

I wish it were that simple, but it isn't. In order to calculate the color of each fragment, I must first calculate the angle between the light ray and the normal. Unfortunately, the normals are interpolated across the polygon, so for each fragment, the calculated color value changes. This is the de...

Default value for "size constraint" when importing

Recently a change was made to the import of .3ds files. It now takes note of a "size constraint" parameter, set in the import dialogue. You can set this to 0 to disable the procedure, but it defaults to 10. Why is this? I don't really understand what purpose it serves. Having a non-zero default valu...

Another vote for this. I've never understood why 3D modelling packages rarely allow "flying camera" style movement. It's much more natural when navigating a 3D environment (perhaps less so for editing small objects from an external perspective, but you'd be able to toggle.)

What makes you think this? Just output the same colour for each fragment of a given triangle.

Good question, I've often wondered why there's so much pure C in the Blender codebase.

Thanks Stiv, though it wasn't a compilation problem. The code was just crashing when loading certain .3ds files - presumably not checking for a NULL pointer where it should have. Anyway, not a problem now that it's been fixed.

Certificate warning when getting through TortoiseSVN

I've recently started getting warnings about the security certificate when updating my Blender workspace through TortoiseSVN. Is there something I need to do, or is there a problem with the certificate's validity? Did it expire? Do the maintainers know about this?

Blender crashes in bm_corners_to_loops when importing .3ds

I build Blender (Windows x86) myself by getting from SVN. Recently it's started crashing when I import my .3ds files. I finally managed to get a debug build working - the crash occurs early in bm_corners_to_loops in mesh.c: for (i=0; i < numTex; i++) { texface = CustomData_get_n(&me->fdata, CD_MTFAC...

Uh, how do we report spam accounts to the admins here? There isn't a button for it, seems to be an ancient version of phpBB.

I don't know about the first problem; but if it happens at random it sounds like a bug. The second issue is more complex. The Collada format is extensible: it comes with some built-in material structures, which correspond to common rendering pipelines. Most DCC apps use only the "common profile" - w...

I certainly encountered a fair few issues with Collada support when I evaluated Blender a while back. Have you put these on the bug tracker?

Hi rboerdijk! I mentioned this to one of the developers while we were talking about other Collada issues, after I got no replies here. It sounded like he was interested, though evidently lots of other stuff came up first. There was apparently a group of people working on Collada stuff but they never...
