Thanks for testing, Andy. Those buttons apparently set the same flag. One cannot be turned on without the other turning on as well. So yes, the sound block Sync button has the same effect. When bugs only happen to me, it's usually because I have 2 CPU's. Sometimes it's because I have nVidia graphics...

I played with that blend file. The audio definitely gets corrupted after a few keys and a few undos, but it didn't crash for me. I noticed something else though. It happens to me a lot on a dual CPU Mac. I don't submit a bug report because I can't reproduce it reliably and it only happens with complex scenes that are too big to upload to the bug tracker. I'm working with a debug build now, so hopefully it will dump something useful when it crashes.
