search this forum for "Blender Basics Tutorial Book" it are three pdf's and there is very well writen how blender works. beside that you could take a look in de documentation on this site.

As for shadows, use a Lamp.

I wanted to try to translate it in dutch. I think it is very usefull for people who don't understand english well enough to read this tutorial.
