How about both... scanline and raytrace... and user can choose witch one to use... but not external renderers... thats plugins for... export and render whit other software example BMRT... I think it's a good idea ("and user can choose witch one to use") , but I think ... if we can use also external...

Based on the very good work at http://www.linux.ucla.edu/~phaethon/blender/blender-autoconf.html, and further tweaking, I made an RPM: http://utelsystems.dyndns.org/apt/redhat/RPMS.testingrh73/blender-2.25b-1.i586.rpm , consists of the binary only. Compiled on and for RedHat 7.3, other may work. --...

For animations ; scanline is very important (it's my opinion) .
For images ; raytracer or/and scanline .
