the easiest way to accomplish that is with one sphear in edit mode. use the top or bottom of the sphear, select the first ring and the center point and drag them in, then select the only the center point and drag it in. One way to do it is to loop select the top edge using alt click, excrude and scale it down a bit so you can see your new verticies, Then with the excruded edge still selected go to the tools at the left and select merge at center. Is ther an updated Hot Key reference? I recently downloaded the same one you posted the link for. It seems to be relatively accurate.
