Hello
most probably is a "wrong normals" problem, in other words, the model's face normals are pointing in the wrong direction!
Select all faces and do Ctrl/N keys to "Recalculate Normals outside"!

"Particles" don't work in the game engine!
One usually "fake" them with a textured plane and the "Add Object Actuator"!

Anyway, "transparency" is set with an image texture with alpha channel, enabling the different settings depending of which Blender version and "technology" !

Are you using GLSL?
And your textures must have the standard dimensions:
128x128, 256X256, 512X512 and so on!

no, the GE can't use Materials, but you can "Bake" them to a UV Texture!
