so you are trying to model a head? or do you just need a way to make meshes freely? I'm not exactly sure what expierence you have...
depending on the type of texturing, you can view it in the "textured" view located at the bottom of the 3d view to see it in open gl mode, or you can preview render the object using the preview box which is shift + p
well I'm not sure what you mean by MD2 and MD3, but i know that if you use the ctrl + J, you will be able to join the two meshes... and all the materials and texturing (UV, orco will get distorded by the changing dimensions) will be intact. you can also just parent the sword to the hand bone... but ...

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly. but you could allways try using the limit selection in the selection mode section of the 3d edit window (located in the bottom right).
if you havent yet found a way... you can allways use both a curve and a mesh to make it with. using alt+c you can convert a curve to a mesh. after making the solid violin face, use a boolean tool (wiki it for more details) to put the nessesary whole in the middle.
what you have to do is copy the missing dll to the windows system or system32 (can't remember off the top of my head, but its where they are all kept) directory, and the error will go away, as for the crashing make sure there are no broken links... but there really the best i can do.
hey steve I'm not sure if this helps, but if you have any expierence with datablocks, each object has a datablock of its own, where as the mesh (with is the actual faces and vertices) also has a datablock where the information is stored. if you want to make duplicates of something, like your column,...
