You need to watch the number of faces, a running total is displayed on the menu bar in blender. Joining the bricks doesn't reduce the number of faces. For efficiency create composite pieces with fewer faces. Also remove pieces that are not visible.

AFAIK Blender doesn't use grid based textures, however this might be of interest to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxgwa-0e5Jw
it uses a similar approach.

Try the Snap tools, the magnet icon, and select project individual elements. Groups of vertices can be 'dropped' onto a plane.

when you add your Torus enter 56 in the Major Radius field and 2 in the Minor Radius field. If you're using 2.5x these options appear under the Object Tools panel.

Zoom Border - Shift B then drag the marquee around the area you want to preview, it'll only render that area.

GLSL is heavily dependent on your graphics card capabilities, less powerful cards (OpenGL) will not display all features.

did you install Python? You need to install the same version that Blender was complied against, in this case Python 2.6

Yafaray and Blender 2.49 use Python 2.6
Blender 2.5x uses Python 3
The Yafaray guys will probably release a Python 3 Yafaray once the latest version of Blender is released (it's currently a beta release)

click the Download button at the top of the page.

Display is based on your graphics card, the ATI's you have are mid range gaming cards, if you plan to work with larger scenes invest in a more powerful graphics card.
