Yeah, you need to either delete half of the mesh, or move the whole thing to one side in editmode, since it uses the object's origin as a mirror center.

The "Mirror" modifier is for doing symmetry. If you simply want to mirror something, press Ctrl+M.

...Yes.
You need to snap "Origin to Geometry". This calculates a new object center and moves the origin (orange dot) there.

You can also try Ctrl+Shift+Alt+C for the same menu, but the hotkey is a handfull.

There are many things that could have gone wrong and i can't say exactly what it is. Go to C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\ and delete the whole Blender Foundation folder, that's where all the settings are saved. The file in your link and the Maya one that comes with Blender are made by the same perso...

Disable "Load UI" in your user Preferences ( File section), and also when opening a file (if it's checked). Another thing - blender now comes with that Maya preset by default, just select it and then file->save user settings. If you're using the script from that site it's possible that it's outdated...

2.5 has a "Measure Panel" in the Addons section. It measures the distance between two points or the surface area of a mesh/selected faces. it uses the scene units, so if you want to change them to something else(metric/imperial/BU) you have to do that from the Scene tab in the Properties window.

By "apply the modifiers" i meant pressing the "Apply" button on them, which will convert them to regular geometry.

That's what i've been saying all the time - it's not about defaults, but customizability. And 2.4x was pretty terrible in that department... It's more about optimizing the program to fit the needs of each individual user, rather than trying to match the behavior of other apps. About the menu - i've ...

That would be helpful - the problem with this is that we can't repeat the bug, even if there is something wrong there.

5 - Ah yes, i get it now. Click-drag grabbing is from the standard "Translate" functions and doesn't look at distance at all - you're better off disabling it entirely. In 3DView (Global) there are two such entries - one handles the G key, and the other one is assigned to Tweak-Select-Any: disable th...
