May be you object is in another layer (try activate all layers)
May be your object isn't centered (try push the dot (.) in numpad after importing)
May be the ClipEnd of your 3Dview is to low (increase it).

Shift+F works, but.... what does it do, exactly(besides covering the hole)? I would really like to know. Fill with faces, nothing more. By the way.... extruding, then Alt+M the center isn't good. Shift+F fill the hole, but is better if you extruede it and do a Alt+M (at center).
