you realize you can shift-click the edge/vert/face selection buttons in the header, and get to a "all", or perhaps "modeless" option? then selecting the closes element indeed works.

using "snap to current frame" can be a boon when working here. I can see where you are coming from- it can be a bit tricky. for instance, if you have a key in the ipo, and want to know what actual frame it lies on , with precision, and without moving it.

well, my suggestion would be to make the ground plane a slightly concave dish, so that the edges touch the horizon, Unless your plane is "infinite" it's always going to be slightly wrong.
