open a terminal window.

cd to some directory where you have write access.

tar jxvf blender-2.49b-linux-glibc236-py26-x86_64.tar.bz2

cd to the newly created directory

./blender

I'm using Blender 2.66a
Can you reproduce the problem with current Blender (2.67)? That specific fix was about 8983 commits ago.

If so, it might be bug report time.

C/C++ programs start with a func int main(). In this case, it is in creator.c.

Some sort of source code browser is handy for exploring Blender's source. One simple tool is cscope.

(["path to the file.exe"]) My guess: your path has backslashes ( the \ char) in it. A number of backslash/single-character combinations are ASCII escape sequences for things like a tab (\t) or a new line (\n). These will mess up your file path. Windows does (or did!) recognize the forward slash (/)...
