Re: CAD

dEs_iGn_eR, could you please explain in as much detail as possible what you're talking about? I guess most Blender users and developers know nearly nothing about CAD. And others like me know only 1 or 2 apps and their terminology. Personaly, I know Solidworks but not Autocad. With all the stuff ment...

Hi!

Sometimes the forum software puts a new post on page 2, but forgets to add navigational means to reach that page. And it tells you're on page 2 of 1 after posting and selecting to visit your new post.
Monkeyboi also knows this behaviour quite well.

Anybody got an idea what this is triggered by?

Grouping, visibility management (formerly Layers)

Hi! Can you believe it? Last thread broken again (can't effectively pot there anymore). For reference: http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2463 http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2498 Update of my Layers page, now under t...

Update of my Layers page, now under the title: "Object grouping and visibility management". I've added som line about lamps and envirnment mapping under what is now the "Research" section. There's something about p_vertex_' concept. But most important is the new "project briefing", where I try to de...

Re: Layers continued

About set management: The menu should never hide the buttons. If the mouse cursor is above a set entry, the layer buttons that will be affected could be highlighted. And maybe their contents in 3d view too. I'm not sure what I've ever said to indicate otherwise. Just the same, I might also disagree...

Thorsten, I've tried to interpret the final description on your page into a mock-up, to see if I understand the jist of it. To counteract the possible impression of ignorance, I just post a link to the reply a the bf-funboard list :-) http://www.blender.org/pipermail/bf-funboard/2003-December/00153...

Re: Layers continued

Just an idea: Grouping layer buttons in fixed sets of 5, with every set toggable by RMB menu. This would impose an arbitrary constraint, and if there's no really, REALLY good reason for it, I'd elect to do something else. The reason would be simplicity. Easy visualisation and nothing to setup for t...

Ok, blendermax:

Mark Shuttleworth (first descendant of european immigrants that enslaved the _actual_ africans in space) is "prepared to fund" some Python related projects for a number of applications, including Blender.

Happy now?

Re: Layers continued

I'd think you'd also have to dimiss the concern you brought up when you mentioned this - that another type of button would confusing. No buttons, no confusion. You're right. Do you mean something that brings up a menu where you can toggle sets of layers? Yes...the same kind of menu that's used for ...

Re: Layers continued

Did you miss the part above that states, specifically, Sets, in and of themselves, would not be associated with buttons... ? Oops, I'm sorry, it somehow slipped out of my mind. So I have to replace button with some widget(s) . As I pointed out, the buttons are not an issue - there are other ways to...

It's me again :-)

I added a new section about the concept of using an object hierarchy for something like layer management to my page:
http://wrstud.urz.uni-wuppertal.de/~ka0 ... index.html

It's at the bottom.

Comments are very welcome!

And another one: Another thought that might add to this discussion is the following excerpt from a white-paper I wrote some time back for another interface proposal: http://karimnassar.com/design/artemis/artemis_functions.html http://karimnassar.com/design/artemis/artemis_modeler.html#stage http://k...

Layers continued (thread broken)

The other layer thread is broken (my last post inaccesible by normal means). For reference: http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=2463 So I post my reply here: ... the ability to toggle different sets of layers on and off, where set membership is not exclusive. ... the ability to toggle different sets of layers on and off, where set membership is not exclusive. Sets, in and of themselves, would not be associated with buttons, nor would they need to have shortcuts (although the ability to assign a shortcut would be nice). The problem, as I've described it,...
